虽然emo这个网络语在去年年末才火起来，但这个词本身存在的时间却很长，大致产生于20世纪80年代，直到2000年出现了一批乐队将这个风格带红。它的乐手形象以及行为很特别，比如黑色直发，修身的衣服和紧身牛仔裤，帆布平底鞋，眼线或眼影。乐队的人也的确很情绪化。他们在演出的过程中毫不隐藏自己的情绪，可能唱到高潮部分便开始边抽泣边咆哮了，估计这就是为什么叫“情绪摇滚”的原因了(据说EMO乐队是最喜欢砸话筒的)。

同时，emo也可指情感核音乐迷。emo乐迷常追随情感核时尚，典型形象是穿紧身牛仔裤，蓄黑色长发（有一点类似我们常说的“非主流”形象），以冲动、敏感、忧郁为特征。所以网络语境下也常用emo来代表“丧”、“忧郁”、“伤感”等含义。由此才引申有“我emo了”，“我直接emo了”等网络流行语。
